Catherine's Traditional Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including award-winning actors.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
