Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
