Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
