The Substance
The filmmaker's daring commentary addresses the tyranny of female beauty as well as the feared consequences of advancing years. This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror stands strong even without a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a cellar, he fears the worst. But the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, various showings, the Sky channel
