RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
