The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to protect the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

The star was given the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was named the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots had in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in improving amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Also the 1994 recipients the group contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved two local spots in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the second in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
